Elise is originally from Vancouver where she attended Simon Fraser University. She was a regular contributor to the student newspaper, and was also on the competitive rowing team. Elise had the opportunity to take an exchange year at a university in Glasgow, Scotland, before graduating from SFU with a double major in Communications and English Literature. She attended UBC’s Allard Law School in Vancouver where she volunteered with the Innocence Project reviewing claims of wrongful conviction, and with the Atira Women’s Resource Society, providing information to low-income women living on the Downtown Eastside. She also served as an Intern at the Provincial Court in Kelowna.

Upon graduation, she articled and worked for several years with a large regional law firm in Kelowna. At the beginning of her legal career she appeared in court and before administrative tribunals on behalf of her clients in commercial disputes, tenancy issues, real estate transactions and estate litigation. She was seconded for a year to UBC as Legal Counsel in the Office of University Counsel, where she provided legal advice to administrators and department heads on contracts, risk management, legal and regulatory compliance, protection of privacy, endowments, and intellectual property.

Upon returning to private practice in Kelowna, she practiced business law, including advising business owners with respect to the purchase and sale of their businesses, entering into commercial leases, franchise agreements and joint ventures, and hiring independent contractors and employees.

Elise also practiced in the area of real estate: advising both individuals and land developers, she interpreted and prepared easements, statutory right of ways, building schemes and covenants. She also handled many residential conveyances. Elise has also advised land developers with respect to construction contracts, subdivision planning and strata legislation.

Elise has a keen interest in tax planning. She provides both simple and complex estate planning, preparing wills and trusts, and advising individuals with respect to business succession planning, protecting the interests of blended families, and planning for beneficiaries with special needs. She prepares Powers of Attorney and Healthcare directives and also assists executors. She is one of the few lawyers in the Okanagan who is able to prepare wills for Indigenous persons with reserve land interests.

At Martin Estate and Injury Law, Elise practices all aspects of wills and estates law. In the Kelowna community she volunteers as a Director for the Southern Interior Land Trust Society and serves as Fundraising Chair for the Kelowna Community Council of the SPCA.

Outside of work, Elise loves backpacking trips. She has hiked two of the Great Walks in New Zealand, the Circuit in the Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile, the West Coast Trail, and the Juan de Fuca Trail. She enjoys curling, hiking, golf, skiing, and camping with her young family.
